Reliability Through Third-Party Commissioning: A Success Story
In our recent project across various commercial facilities in India, we encountered a recurring issue with condenser water pumps tripping frequently despite the motors and pumps functioning correctly. Our project and O&M teams initially tried throttling valves to mitigate this problem, but the real solution lay in understanding the root cause.
Highlights:
Design vs. Actual Head: The condenser water pumps were designed for a head range of 25 to 35 meters, but the actual requirement was only 15 to 20 meters. This discrepancy led to higher cooling water flow and increased current and power consumption.
Solution: By replacing the pumps with a lower-size impeller, we aligned the head requirement with the actual needs. Subsequent functional performance tests on the chillers confirmed optimal performance.
Outcome: This adjustment not only resolved the tripping issue but also improved the energy performance of the HVAC system, reducing the energy consumption of the condenser water pumps.
Benefits:
Energy Savings: Saved around 10,000 units of electricity annually.
Cost Savings: Approximately ₹1 lakh saved annually with an investment of less than ₹0.5 lakh, achieving payback in just 6 months.
Sustainability Impact: Identified potential retrofits during commissioning that significantly reduce the facility’s carbon footprint.
This project underscores the importance of third-party commissioning and simple yet effective interventions in enhancing system reliability and sustainability.
