As a leading sustainability consulting firm, we are always on the lookout for the latest developments and best practices in the green building industry. That is why we are excited to share with you the news that the energy requirements for LEED v4 have been updated to address the climate crisis and the need for higher performance standards.
The update, which was approved by the USGBC member ballot process, will take effect on March 1, 2024. It will apply to all projects that register on or after that date, and it will affect the following credits and prerequisites:
– Energy and Atmosphere Prerequisite Minimum Energy Performance
– Energy and Atmosphere credit Optimize Energy Performance
– Energy and Atmosphere credit Annual Energy Use
The update will raise the threshold for energy efficiency and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions, and introduce a new GHG emissions metric. It will also allow for more flexibility in measuring energy efficiency using energy cost or source energy metrics.
The update is designed to encourage design practices that prioritize performance at the highest levels and incentivize GHG emissions reductions. It is based on the analysis of projects certified under LEED v4 and the current expectations of market leadership.
We believe that this update is a significant step forward for the green building industry and the planet. We are committed to helping our clients and partners achieve their sustainability goals and comply with the updated requirements. We have the expertise, experience, and tools to deliver high-performance built environments that are energy-efficient, healthy, and resilient.
